While the requirements driving the need for increased broadband are often unique to individual communities, the solutions that will help them reach their goal are much larger in scale. Companies developing broadband solutions require tremendous economies of scale and the ability to serve as many customers as possible to offset the large capital investment. Realizing the need for larger scale planning, OIT in partnership with the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) and the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) developed the Regional Broadband Planning Effort to help all regions of state understand their current broadband environment and develop plans for reaching their ultimate goals. In short, the plans allow regions to answer three general questions:

  1. Where are we at with broadband coverage and capacity?
  2. What is driving our demands and where do we want to be?
  3. What are the gaps we need to fill and how do we fill them?

The Department of Local Affairs, who is funding the projects has a compilation of all planning activities that can be accessed here.
